The Two Reverse Varieties
In 1879, the San Francisco Mint used two distinctly different reverse dies, resulting in two varieties that differ based on the eagle's breast and arrow feathers:

  • Reverse of 1879 (Third Reverse): This is the much more common variety. The eagle has a rounded breast and a slanted top arrow feather (SAF). These display excellent "frosty" luster and were heavily preserved in Treasury vaults.
  • Reverse of 1878 (Second Reverse): A smaller, highly sought-after number of coins were struck using older 1878 reverse dies. These feature a flatter eagle's breast and a parallel top arrow feather (PAF). Because this was discovered by collectors relatively recently, it commands a major premium.

This example is the reverse of 1879.  It has the unique distinction of being sold with an original ANACS grading documents from 1985.
