Minted from 1815 to 1838, the U.S. Capped Bust quarter features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty in a cloth cap and a heraldic eagle on the reverse. Designed by John Reich and later modified by William Kneass, the series is composed of 89.2% silver and 10.8% copper.
The series is divided into two major subtypes:
- Large Size (1815–1828): These measure \(27\text{ mm}\) in diameter. The reverse design includes a scroll ribbon above the eagle that reads E PLURIBUS UNUM.
- Reduced Diameter (1831–1838): Redesigned by William Kneass, the diameter was reduced to \(24.3\text{ mm}\) to improve the striking process using a "close collar" method. This update gave the coin a raised rim for protection against wear and removed the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner from the reverse. [1]
Key Collectible Details:
- Rarity: No quarters were struck in 1826, 1829, or 1830. The \(1823/2\) overdate and the \(1827\) restrikes are famous, highly valuable rarities.
- Varieties: Collectors often catalog these by "B-" numbers, referencing Ard W. Browning's standard reference guide.
- Availability: Aside from the major rarities, most 1831–1838 dates are very accessible to collectors.
